Abstract: Vascular Imaging is a key component in comprehensive stroke diagnosis. Aiming at the complex background of vascular images, weak contrast between the vessels and the background, a new vascular enhancement method based on classical image processing techniques is proposed. The problem in Canny’s hysteresis thresholding method having two threshold values which yielded low performance in localization and noise rejection has been overcome with a not complicated and accurate algorithm. In this paper an efficient image enhancement algorithm i.e., pre processing, contrast adjustment and edge abstraction is implemented on Spartan -3 FPGA using Simulink model which comprises of Simulink blocks and Xilinx blocks. Accurate and faster results are obtained by interfacing with Matlab and XSG through the workspace of Matlab.

Abstract: Energy consumption becomes a main concern in a Wireless Sensor Network. Wireless sensor network (WSN) requires robust and energy efficient communication protocols to minimize the energy consumption as much as possible. In this project, the investigation of the impact of outlying sensor readings and broken links on high-fidelity data gathering is carried out, and propose Compressive sensing Theory based bounded relay hop mobile data gathering (CST-BRH) approaches, Here a subset of sensors will be selected as polling points that buffer locally aggregated data and upload the data to the mobile collector when it arrives. It also identify outlying sensor readings and derive the corresponding accurate values, and to infer broken links. The proposed design is validated by an extensive simulation study, and the results indicate that CST-BRH method is superior over traditional in-network data compression techniques for practical sensor network settings. This analyze the trade-off between energy saving and data gathering latency in mobile data gathering.

Abstract: The core function and use of content management systems is to present information on websites. CMS features vary widely from system to system. Simple systems showcase a handful of features, while other releases notably enterprise systems offer more complex and powerful functions. Most CMS include Web-based publishing, format Management, revision control (version control), indexing, searching and information retrieval. An additional feature is indexing, search, and retrieval. A CMS system indexes all data within an organization. Individuals can then search for data using keywords, which the CMS system retrieves. A CMS system also provides tools for one-to-one marketing that provides an ability to a website to tailor its content and advertising to a user‟s specific characteristics using information provided by the user or gathered by the site (for example, a particular user‟s page sequence pattern). The CMS increments the version number when new updates are added to an already-existing file. A CMS may serve as a central repository containing documents, movies, pictures, phone numbers, and scientific data. CMS can be used for storing, controlling, revising, semantically enriching and publishing documentation

Abstract: Edge detection is one of the most frequently used operations in image analysis, and there are possibly more methods and algorithms in the literature for detecting edges than any other single subject. The reason for this is that edges form the outline of an object. An edge is the boundary between an object and the background, and indicates the boundary between overlapping objects. For this paper we compare different edge detections methods using Remote Sensing images.

Abstract: Wireless sensor nodes are uniquely suited for monitoring environmental events owing to certain advantages like small size, wireless nature. However, their usage is restricted by only one engineering limitation i.e. short lifetime. There is always a need of an efficient architecture tailored towards enhancing network lifetime which strongly depends on Data Dissemination strategy used. Data Dissemination is the dissemination of the monitored information, the tasks that sensors are supposed to perform and report to the sink. So it is an important issue to design suitable Data Dissemination protocol according to different application scenarios. A variety of different energy efficient Data Dissemination protocols are proposed in recent years. However there is little comparative study of different Data Dissemination strategies available. In this paper, we present the comprehensive analysis of various Data Dissemination strategies. This paper provides useful insights for the network designer such as which Data Dissemination protocols scale well, reduce overall energy consumption or improve task completion.

Abstract: Ad hoc networks are peer networks of mobile computational nodes. They are well explored in the contexts of sensor networks, habitat monitoring and robotic collaboration. Recently, ad hoc networks have elicited increasing interest as flexible distributed application environments. Today, many people carry numerous portable devices, such as laptops, mobile phones, PDAs (personal digital assistant) and mp3 players, for use in their professional and private lives. For the most part, these devices are used separately ie. their applications do not interact. Ad hoc wireless communication between devices might be loosely defined as a scheme, often referred to as ad hoc networking, which allows devices to establish communication, anytime and anywhere without the aid of a central infrastructure. In this article, the concept of mobile ad hoc networking along with its applications that can be envisoned are being described. Ad hoc networking covers a broad swath of situations. An ad hoc network might consist of several home-computing devices, plus a notebook computer that must exist on home and office networks without extra administrative work[I]. Such a network might also need to exist when the people and equipment in normally unrelated military units need to work together in combat.

Improving the quality of Service of EDCF over DCF For Real Time Applications Using Probability Algorithm
HARPREET SINGH, TARUNDEEP SINGH, MANPREET KAUR
Abstract: IEEE 802.11 (802.11) WLAN standard is being accepted widely and rapidly for many different environments today Main characteristics of the 802.11 networks are their simplicity and robustness against failures due to the distributed approach. They are created and maintained by the IEEE LAN/MAN Standards Committee (IEEE 802). Quality of Service (QoS) support is the key for multimedia applications over WLAN. So, since the demand for QoS is nowadays is a topic of great concern for the transmission of the different services like video, voice, best-effort services controlling the maximum network applications, background services for which the priority assigned is lower than the one assigned to the standard. So in order to get the better Qos at our desired application we need to control the network parameters in such a way that we get a certain output and according to the output we will see that at which station we are getting the maximum output. And at that station we will send the access category at which we want the best output Qos. So, we have resolved this problem of attaining the good Qos at our desired station by giving the random values for the contention window and the arbitrary interframe spaces is done by calculating the probability of winning and the probability of collisions. Due to the increasing demand of high rates WLANS in the applications like video streaming and voice over IP. It's mandatory to improve its performance in every possible way for the ease of the user. To calculate the probability of winning of a station for random values of AIFS and CW using the proposed algorithm and to find out the probability of the collisions in a station for the random values of AIFS and CW using the proposed algorithm and also to analyze the result and check where the output coming better. Then the station at which we are getting the maximum output we will send that data for which we want the best QOS.

Abstract: Analog –to-digital converter is an important device has a huge application in todays digitized world. Flash converter is high speed converter among all other ADCs. It consists of 2N comparators that provide thermometer coded ouput which is converted to a digital output by an encoder. In high speed ADCs comparator plays an important role for high speed application using minimization techniques. The main disadvantage of flash type ADC is power hungry so the aim is to design low power flash type ADC with low power comparator. The design issues are related to gain, phase, gain bandwidth, resolution, speed, area and power dissipation. Simple two stage opamp with miller capacitance can be used as a high gain comparator. It can be easily operated at low power. It is simulated in 180nm technology using cadence virtuoso analog design environment simulation. The op-amp uses a 1.8volt Vdd and a -1.8volt Vss and consumes a power of around 0.9mW (as per post layout simulations). The analog output of each comparator is encoded using cascading full adder designed by pass transistor logic that makes the circuit more faster.

Abstract: In the current era of huge datacenters opting for Virtual infrastructure, vSphere provides a vast array of features which makes virtualization very effective and flexible. Major challenge ahead of vSphere administrators is to analyse the capabilities of each ESXi hosts in datacenter and to find out the server which is capable to run a specific vSphere feature. This paper proposes a utility 'vAnalyser' to scan the servers in vSphere datacenter and generate a 'feature to server' compatibility matrix. Datacenter Administrator can refer to this compatibility matrix and quickly identify the server(s) which fulfil the requirements to use a vSphere feature. Currently users do not have such a tool to get a consolidated report to analyse vSphere features usable on a server. For example , Administrators want to know the servers in datacenter on which they can deploy a Virtual Machine of size more than 2TB or list of servers in datacenter between which vMotion is possible. Report generated by vAnalyser answers these queries of feature compatibility requirements. This tool can even be used by vSphere testers to identify servers with desired capabilities to test a specific vSphere feature. The tool will use VMware vSphere Management SDK to trace through the datacenter and prepare the matrix. We show the approach in which data can be fetched from datacenters and presented using an elementary prototype.

Abstract: The leakage of dangerousand flammable gas like LPG in cars, service stations, households and in storage tanks can bedetected using the gas sensor unit. This unit can be easily integrated into aunit that can sound an alarm. The sensor has great sensitivity and rapid response time. This sensor can also beused to sense other gases like iso-butane, propane and even cigarette smoke. The output of the sensor goes LOW as soon as the sensor senses any gas leakage in the atmosphere. This is detected by the microcontroller and buzzer is turned on. After a delay of few milliseconds, the exhaust fan is also turned on for throwing the gas out and the main power supply is turned off. A message ‗LEAKAGE‘ is sent to a mobile number that is predefined.

Abstract: Electronics and computational techniques are increasingly being used to analyze biological cells to diagnose diseases and develop methodologies to cure diseases inside the body. One such technology is „Nanotechnology‟. The paper emphasizes on the best and effective utilization of Nanotechnology in the treatment of cancer. The design of nanodevice is based on the constant study of cancer cells and nanotechnology. The nanodevice is injected to the patient which can travel through blood vessel, identify and destroy cancer cells. The system is fully automated whereby the device manages to move to the affected cells through certain algebraic calculations automatically wherever it might be placed. This would be loaded into a simple microprocessor like 8085 and can be embedded along with the nanodevice for automatic discovery of cancer cells. Manual guidance and monitoring is done to control the device explicitly, further more command signals are activated automatically or manually to destroy the affected cells through RF signals. The theme is based on the fact that the cancer cells get destroyed on exposure to RF signals, due to high heat generation. In our paper we design a device that contains sensors, transceivers, motors and a processor which are made up of biodegradable compound. No more destruction of healthy cells due to harmful toxins and radiations generated through chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Abstract: The design of more complex systems becomes an increasingly difficult task because of different issues related to latency, design reuse, throughput and cost that has to be considered while designing. In Real-time applications there are different communication needs among the cores. When NoCs (Networks on chip) are the means to interconnect the cores, use of some techniques to optimize the communication are indispensable. From the performance point of view, large buffer sizes ensure performance during different applications execution. But unfortunately, these same buffers are the main responsible for the router total power dissipation. Another aspect is that by sizing buffers for the worst case latency incurs in extra dissipation for the mean case, which is much more frequent. Reconfigurable router architecture for Noc is designed for processing elements communicate over a second communication level using direct-links between neighbouring elements. Several possibilities to use the router as additional resources to enhance complexity of modules are presented. The reconfigurable router is evaluated in terms of area, speed and latencies. With the reconfigurable router it was possible to reduce the congestion in the network, while at the same time reducing power dissipation and improving energy.

Abstract: We present and evaluate a new technique for detecting resource leaks in programs with dynamic memory allocation. A resource leak refers to a type of resource consumption in which the program cannot release resources it has acquired. Typically the result of a bug, common resource issues, such as memory leaks, often only cause problems in very specific situations or after extensive use of an application. To verify the effectiveness of the patterns, experiments are given to use them to detect real resource leaks in large open source projects. After you check your program for threading and memory errors and it is clean, if you still have an intermittent failure that you cannot quite track down, it could be caused by a resource leak.

Yet another way of Ranking web Documents Based On Semantic Similarity
VIDYA KANNAN, DR. G.N.SRINIVASAN Department of Information Science and Engineering, RV College of Engineering, Bangalore, India
Abstract: In today’s web enabled world, searching for relevant information on web has been an important topic of research. Semantic similarity aims at providing robust tools for standardizing the content and delivery of relevant information across communicating information sources. Most of the times the user gets lots of irrelevant data as a result of poorly implemented search process. To avoid this, a ranking scheme is proposed, which provides the search result- set according to the better understood and correctly interpreted user query. This is done by considering the relevance of the query by keeping the user view in mind and also the semantics of the document and the user query. The simple lexical and/or syntactical matching usually used by search engines does not extract web documents to the user expectations. The proposed solution provides the most relevant data to user ranked in their relevance. The proposed ranking scheme for the semantic web search engine functions by finding the semantic similarity between the information available on the web and the query which is specified by the user. This approach considers both the syntactic structure of the document and the semantic structure of the document and the query. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate that a semantic similarity based ranking scheme will provide much better results than those by the prevailing methods. In this Paper an algorithm will be implemented that provides ranking scheme for the semantic web documents by finding the semantic similarity between the documents and the query which is specified by the user. The algorithm considers both syntactical and semantic similarities of the query and categorizes the search results based on the most probable and most appropriate interpretation of the query based on various interpretations taking into account all the words and their combinations in the query.

Abstract: In the mobile Ad hoc networks (MANETs) the mobility of nodes is one the important factor that needs to be taken care and hence there has to be a certain way to determine the relative location of any node and thus the cluster based algorithm provides one of the best solution to this problem. The fuzzy logic approach provides us the method to find the degree of truthness and hence can be best used to test the solution on the tool like MATLAB. In this paper proposed ABC (Antcolony Based Clusterhead) Selection algorithm have been testified based on the fuzzy logic on the MATLAB tool .This cluster formation algorithm provides us with a way to determine the node to be selected as a Clusterhead with in a cluster through the use of Ant colony optimization (ACO). The probability function designed in the paper helps in determining the probability for various nodes to be selected as a cluster head.
RAHTAP Algorithm for Congestion Control in Wireless Sensor Network
ASHISH KUMAR LUHA, VENGATTRAMAN T, SATHYA M Department of Computer Science, Pondicherry University, Puducherry, India
Abstract: Wireless sensor network (WSNs) can be constructed as an intelligent, large autonomous instrument for scientific observation at fine temporal and spatial granularities and over large areas such as environmental monitoring. WSNs typically operate under light load and suddenly become activate in response to a detected or monitored events. Depending on the application this can result in the generation of a large, sudden, and correlated impulse of data that must be delivered to a small no of sinks without disrupting the performance of the sensing application. This generation of data packets is usually uncontrolled and often leads to congestion. There are two techniques by which congestion can be reduced which are: either by reducing the data sending rate of source or by providing extra resources. Congestion in WSNs is high if load in the network is high. So network load is reduced upon elimination of redundant number of packets in WSNs. In this paper we implement Redundancy Aware Hierarchical Tree Alternative Path (RAHTAP) algorithm which eliminates the duplicate packets from the network and achieve reduction in network load as per packets basis which create dynamic alternative path from source to sink when congestion on a particular node. This algorithm works over the thought of existing congestion control algorithm HTAP. We use here QualNet Simulator to mimic the consequence which demonstrates RAHTAP is a proficient calculation and straightforward solution for confronting over-burden circumstance in WSN in examination with HTAP.

Abstract: To facilitate end user with high bandwidth data services different architectures has been proposed. Previous studies shows loose coupling has worst performance i.e. connecting WLAN to IP backbone directly. For high bandwidth application tight coupling integration of UMTS-WLAN is the efficient way, there are two way to form tight coupling i.e. connecting WLAN with either SGSN or GGSN. Both the technique is far better than loose coupling. Architecture for WLAN-SGSN and WLAN-GGSN are developed and analyzed. The simulated result on OPNET Modeler 14.0 reveals for high bandwidth data services, integration of WLAN-GGSN is best as it has minimum packet lose, better response time and goods QoS (Quality of Service).

Abstract: This work relates to an alternative solution that provides a peer-to-peer SMS security that guarantees provision of confidentiality, authentication, integrity and non-repudiation security services. Short message service (SMS) is a very popular and one of the easy to use communication technology for mobile phone devices. Originally, this service was not designed to transmit secured data, so the security was not an important issue during its design. Yet today, it is sometimes used to exchange sensitive information between communicating parties. A combined cryptographic scheme has been used which is combination of the Diffie Hellman Key Exchange, PBE, SHA and AES algorithms to achieve more robust functionality. For implementation, Android SDK has been developed in Android to introduce a required security services for SMS. The developed application is tested on real equipment such as a device supported to Android 2.2 version. It is able to achieve all the required cryptographic operations completely on the users‟ mobile phone in less than one second for each operation, and thus the mobile phone performance still remains effective.

3-D Difference Histogram Modification for Reversible Data Hiding
MEERA K, MANU G THOMAS M. Tech Student Computer Science, Jawaharlal College of Engineering and Technology, Calicut University, India M.E, Computer Science and Engineering, Annamalai University, Chidambaram, India
Abstract: 3-Dimensional Difference Histogram Modification for reversible data hiding is a technique, in which a reversible data hiding scheme is proposed by using difference-pair-mapping for 3-d images. For each pixel pair, it calculate the differences of neighbouring pixel values and select some difference numbers for difference expansion.. Then, a three-dimensional difference-histogram is generated. Finally, reversible data embedding is implemented according to the improved Difference Pair Mapping and LSB method. In 3-d Difference Histogram Modification for Reversible Data Hiding, a separable reversible data hiding is implemented. The LSB algorithm is improved to RGB- LSB algorithm for 3-d images. The image redundancy can be better exploited and an improved embedding performance is achieved by this approach. A pixel-pair-selection strategy is also adapted to use the pixel-pairs located in smooth image regions to embed data. This can further enhance the embedding performance.

Abstract: A Cognitive radio (CR) network is an intelligent radio network that can be programmed and configured dynamically. It allows users to opportunistically transmit in the Primary User’s spectrum bands without any interference. Relevantly, frequent sensing of the spectrum and spectrum availability variation with time by the CR users has an effect on the OSI layer protocol performance, especially at the transport layer. This paper investigates the drawbacks of TCP newReno in a CR ad hoc network environment, and put forwarded TCP CRAHN. This approach also includes incorporating spectrum awareness by a combined method of explicit feedback from the intermediate nodes and the receiver node. During the quality of being mobile of unlicensed users there occurs a scheduling problem which increases the delay. So, a scheduling algorithm is being introduced to reduce the delay and enhanced the throughput.
Efficient Gray Image Compression using Modified JPEG 2000 Standard
AMAN CHANDRAKAR, RAMKISHAN DEWANGAN P.G.Student, Department of CSE, CSIT durg india Assistant Professor, Department of CSE, CSIT durg india
Abstract: The rapid growth of digital imaging applications, including desktop publishing, multimedia, teleconferencing, and high definition television (HDTV) has increased the need for effective and standardized image compression techniques. Lots of techniques are available for the Single channel image compression. i.e. for gray images. For still image compression, the “Joint Photographic Experts Group” or JPEG standard has been established by ISO (International Standards Organization) and IEC (International Electro-Technical Commission). Since then lots of work had been done on single channel image compression mostly based on JPEG compression. But rapid growth in modern communication demands the direct transmission and storage of images with higher compression ratio and less mean square error (RMSE). The available JPEG standard can able to provide smaller root mean square error but not able to generate higher compression ratio. This arises the need of image compression techniques which can able to keep RMSE within an allowable range and simultaneously able to generate higher compression ratio (CR). This paper brought forward a mathematical modification on available JPEG 2000 image compression algorithm so that it can able to provide higher compression efficiency with allowable error rate.

Abstract: The data stream is a new arrival of research area in data mining where as data stream refers to the process of extracting knowledge structures from unlimited and fast growing data records. Future applications involved in data streams are motivated by many researchers involving continuous and massive data sets such as telecommunication system, customer click streams, ecommerce, meteorological data, network monitor, stock market and wireless sensor network. For handling this type of stream data, the recent data mining methods are not sufficient and equipped to deal with them, for this reason it leads to a numerous computational and mining challenges due to shortage of hardware limitations. Nowadays many researchers have focused on mining data streams and they proposed many techniques for data stream classification and clustering, as well as mining frequent items from data streams. Data stream clustering and outlier detection provides a number of unique challenges in evolving data stream environment. Data stream clustering algorithms are highly used for detecting the outliers in efficient manner. The main purpose of this research work is to perform the clustering process and detecting the outliers in data streams. In this research work, two types of clustering algorithms namely BIRCH with K-Means and CURE with K-means is used for finding the outliers in data streams. Two performance factors such as clustering accuracy and outlier detection accuracy are used for observation. Through examining the experimental results, it is observed that the CURE with K-Means clustering algorithm performance is more accurate than the BIRCH with K-Means algorithm.

Abstract: Network Intrusion Detection is an important technology in business sector as well as in high security zones such as research. It is an effective weapon that provides information security. A Network Intrusion Detection System is used to monitor networks for attacks or intrusions and report these intrusions to the administrator in order to take appropriate action. Computers that form networked distributed systems, may span multiple buildings sometimes located thousands of miles apart. The network of such a system is a pathway for communication between the computers in the distributed system. The network is also a pathway for intrusion. This system is designed to detect some common attacks (i.e. SYN Flooding and IP spoofing in this case) on network systems. It follows the signature based IDs methodology for ascertaining attacks. A signature based IDS will monitor packets on the network and compare them against a signatures or attributes from known malicious threats. It has been implemented in Java with help of JPcap Library. In this system the attack log displays the list of attacks to the administrator for evasive action. This system works as an alert device in the event of attacks directed towards an entire network.

Abstract: In this paper, we proposed some selection criteria for the puncturing vector to achieve excellent performance in terms of BER and gives useful guideline for design of puncturing vector based on simulation result. In this paper, we have compared the performance of turbo code for different puncturing location for two parity branches. Punctured turbo codes may show poor performance due to uneven error protection of input bits after puncturing. The focus of the work is on understanding and design of Punctured Turbo codes. This includes through investigation of central components that influence Turbo code performance, such as encoders and the interleaver. The investigations are carried out for transmission on additive white Gaussian noise channels. For our simulation size of interleaver selected is 1024*1024 and keeping the number of iteration 6. Simulations are conducted on MATLAB at maximum SNR range of 6 dB. In addition we also simulate the performance of punctured turbo codes with increasing the number of iteration and its effect on the performance is analyzed.

Abstract: The introduction and continuous development of information and communication technologies has made governments across the globe realize their potential benefits. Although the computerization of departments has enhanced the efficiency with which information is handled and processed, it comes at a large cost in terms of infrastructure, skilled personnel and user reluctance. Whenever there is a change or update in technology, there arises a major need to update the infrastructure, skill set as well as the user perspective. Its not always possible to carry out such hugely expensive changes every time there is a technology update. Leaving aside the under-developed ones, even the developed countries would not afford to risk their resources for such tasks every now and then. In this paper, we take up the issue from a cloud based computing perspective and propose a cloud framework for the Indian National e- Governance Plan (NeGP) to ensure interoperability functionality among different states and to see the benefits such as - reduce the operating costs, provide greater reliability, transparency and sustainability while using latest technologies.
Attaining an Efficient Coherent Optical OFDM System
N.SANGEETHA, K.P.NITHIN, M.AAKASH Assistant Professor, ECE, VIT University, Vellore, India Student, ECE, VIT University, Vellore, India Student, ECE, VIT University, Vellore, India
Abstract: Coherent optical OFDM (CO-OFDM) is a promising technology for the next-generation optical transmission systems beyond 100 GB/s which has been proposed recently and its implementation has shown extreme robustness against chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion. The proposed synchronization method provides better results when compared with Schmidl, Minn and Park’s methods in terms of timing and frequency offset estimation. Since CO-OFDM is sensitive to noises, channel estimation plays an important role in detecting baseband data from the received signal. A DFT based channel estimation technique is proposed which gives a better performance when compared to conventional LS and MMSE methods.

Abstract: In computer networking, cloud computing refers to the connection of several computers connected over the internet for service utility, which acts as a pool of virtualised computer source. It is a means of running a same program at the same time over a number of connected computers. The basic foundation is service oriented architecture and virtualisation of hardware and software. A cloud is able to host different workloads and it allows workloads to be deployed/scaled-out on-demand by rapidly providing virtual or physical machine, redundancy, self-recovering, highly- scalable programming models and allowing workloads to recover from hardware/software failures and rebalance allocations. The technology faces several significant challenges and the current research focuses on the technical issues that arise when building and providing clouds and the implications on enterprises and users.

Abstract: In this paper the transmission performance of 32 × 10 Gbps with 0.8 nm channel spacing dense wavelength division multiplexed system using hybrid optical amplifiers (RAMAN-EDFA, RAMAN-SOA AND EDFA-SOA) has been investigated. The performance has been compared at different distances and has been evaluated on the basis of Quality factor, optical output power, bit error rate and average eye opening. It is observed that maximal transmission distance of 224 Km is achieved in case of RAMAN-EDFA whereas in RAMAN-SOA and EDFA-SOA hybrid amplifiers the signal can travel up to maximum distance of 218 and 211 Km with acceptable Quality Factor and Bit Error Rate respectively. The RAMAN-EDFA hybrid optical amplifier also provides the highest output power of 14.205 dBm and minimum bit error rate of 1.96e-10 at 224 Km.
Performance of Spectrum Sensing over Fading Channels and an Energy Efficient Cooperative Spectrum Sensing Scheme for Cognitive Radio
VISWANATHAN RAMACHANDRAN, ALICE CHEERAN Electrical Engineering Department, Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute, Mumbai, India
Abstract: Cognitive Radio (CR) is a radio communications and networking technology that has recently attracted considerable interest from academia as well as industry worldwide. It follows the design philosophy of Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) as opposed to a fixed spectrum allocation policy. The enabling technology for CR is spectrum sensing, which is the inference of presence/absence of primary users (PU) in a given spectral band. Spectrum sensing is complicated by the fading effects of wireless channels, which necessitates CRs to collaborate with one another to make sensing results robust. Another aspect that must be considered in practical CR networks is the energy efficiency of the spectrum sensing process, due to the recent emphasis on 'Green Wireless'. This paper first evaluates the performance of spectrum sensing over different fading channels and shows how collaborative sensing improves robustness. Subsequently, the paper considers an improvement to current techniques for energy efficient spectrum sensing by employing techniques from the field of Compressed Sensing (CS).
