Abstract: Adaptive Reinforcement Learning (ARL) has become a paradigm shift of autonomous optimization of resources in dynamic and uncertain settings. The conventional management methods of resources are based on inflexible models and rule-based decision making systems which are not responsive to the environmental changes, system needs or operational limitations. Adaptive reinforcement learning models deal with such constraints by allowing systems to adopt optimal resource allocation policies by a continuous interaction with the environment, adaptation through feedback and long run optimization of rewards. The models are especially useful when working with such systems as smart grids, autonomous vehicles, cloud computing, smart agriculture, and intelligent infrastructure systems. ARL ensures the efficient use of the computational, energy, and physical resources through the introduction of adaptive learning mechanisms, multi-agent coordination, and real-time optimization of decisions. Recent progress in deep reinforcement learning, multi-agent reinforcement learning as well as hybrid intelligent frameworks has greatly contributed in increasing the scale, convergence rate and accuracy of decisions. Besides, the incorporation with edge computing, digital twins, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies allows managing the resources in a decentralized and autonomous way. This paper provides an in-depth review of adaptive reinforcement learning frameworks in the context of autonomous resource optimization, their approaches, functionality, and industrial use. Experimental evidence has shown that learning about adaptive reinforcement has great efficacy in streamlining processes and operating at a lower cost, the system remains stable and autonomous decision making with complex resource management settings is successful.
