Abstract: Railway stations are large and complex public environments containing platforms, entrances, exits, ticket counters, waiting areas, food facilities, restrooms, enquiry desks and other passenger services. Finding a particular facility can be difficult for first-time visitors, elderly passengers, passengers with disabilities and people travelling under time pressure. This paper expands the SIH1710 problem into a structured research and prototype proposal for a software-based railway-station navigation system.
The proposed system maintains a digital representation of station locations and provides route guidance from a passengerβs current or selected starting point to a chosen destination. A mobile application can provide interactive maps and directions, while digital kiosks can offer an alternative interface. Accessibility is treated as a core design consideration through voice guidance, readable instructions, route preferences, multilingual assistance and optional augmented-reality cues.
The paper discusses the problem definition, objectives, related technologies, system architecture, navigation workflow, data entities, technology stack, testing approach, limitations and future scope. The work is presented as an academic prototype-oriented solution; practical deployment would require station-specific maps, positioning infrastructure, operational data, validation and coordination with railway authorities.
