Abstract: Smart Education is an emerging approach to teaching and learning in which Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital technologies, data-driven tools, and online learning environments are integrated to make education more flexible, responsive, and learner-centred. Traditional educational models commonly deliver similar instruction to learners despite differences in prior knowledge, learning speed, interests, and academic needs. This paper examines how AI and digital technologies can address some of these differences, with particular attention to personalized learning, Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS), learning analytics, generative AI, automated assessment, and AI-based teaching assistance. The study follows an exploratory, qualitative, literature-based research design and synthesizes findings from academic literature and institutional reports, including systematic reviews and UNESCO guidance. The reviewed evidence indicates that AI- enabled tutoring and adaptive technologies can support learning and provide faster feedback, but the presence of AI alone does not guarantee improved educational outcomes. Effective instructional design, relevant curriculum content, appropriate assessment, teacher involvement, data quality, and continuous evaluation remain essential. Generative AI can extend educational assistance by producing explanations, examples, summaries, practice questions, and feedback through natural-language interaction. At the same time, it introduces concerns including inaccurate or fabricated information, privacy risks, algorithmic bias, academic integrity, unequal access, and overdependence on automated assistance. Based on the literature, this paper proposes a human-centred AI teaching assistant model in which AI supports routine academic assistance while teachers retain responsibility for mentoring, judgement, motivation, contextual understanding, and final oversight. The paper concludes that Smart Education is most meaningful when technology is selected according to educational objectives, implemented with appropriate safeguards, and evaluated using evidence of actual learning, usability, and equity.
